PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE CERTIFICATE - by Michael Pilarski
International standards for permaculture design course (pdc) certification includes a minimum of 72 hours of instruction (usually given over 12 to 14 course-days). Certificates of course completion will be awarded to students who complete the 10-day (two 5-day segments) course plus attend some follow-up workshops.
This particular pdc on Kauai is only 10 days. It is short for several reasons, primarily to do with making the course affordable (in time and money). To issue pdc graduation certificates I feel it is necessary to require additional requirements besides attending the 10 days. This “homework” can include:
- A) Take one, or more, one-day permaculture classes held within a month of the main course. These are likely to include:
- * Natural building by Huckleberry Neil Leonard.
- * Energy systems in permaculture by Gary Seals.
- * Vermicomposting and soil regeneration by Cristal.
- * Gardening by Gary and Jillian Seals.
- * Nursery work, plant propagation and plantings by Ray Maki.
- These workshops would focus on hands-on . It remains to be decided whether the workshops would be by-donation or have a set fee for people who have attended all 10 days of the main course.
- B) Teach a short workshop on permaculture in your local community.
- C) Read specified permaculture books.
- D) Design and document one or more permaculture designs for properties.
- E) Some combination of the above or other agreed upon activity.
All of these options allow for meeting pdc certification requirements.
Michael Pilarski will award permaculture design course certificates at the end of the 10-day course with the understanding that people will fulfill their homework contracts. Each person will negotiate a personalized homework assignment with Michael towards the end of the course which includes a signed contract.
